This past weekend my wife and I hosted a photographer meet up at our studio Polite Company Press. One of the reasons we opened the studio was to have a place for people to visit, meet, and feel more connected to each other.
Other than our opening party, this was our first event. I put out a flyer on Instagram letting people know there’d be a free beer and a print in it for them if they visited. I figured at least that way someone would turn up. It’s late spring in Seoul, and a street beer in a neighbourhood alley as the sun crept around the building opposite seemed like a good time to me.
One by one, photographers coaxed out of the solitude that is the medium rounded the corner of our little alley and pulled up a chair. It was super cool to see so many people pull in and get chatting to each other. My hope was that people would make a friend and get to see what other photographers out here are up to. That’s why I offered a print of their work to anyone who wanted one.
I ended up making in the region of 20 A4 prints of everything from portraits to street to medium format. That was my other hope: printing can be a little daunting before you first try it and I wanted to show how rad the results could be. I think people were jazzed to see a hard copy of their work, but most happy to just be chatting with other people that get excited about photos.
Four separate people asked when the next one would be, before this one had even finished. If you have the space and the time, think about throwing your own little meet up. It’s a super positive way to spend a sunny afternoon.
Cheers,
Chris
I wish you were in my neighbourhood 😃. What a great initiative.
It would have been great to have you there! I really do recommend putting one together if you have the time and space for it
