"Honestly, this approach didn’t lead to too many pairs that made it into my final project. But it did get me to really look deep for relationships between the images, maybe more so than the other pairing methods did."
So in my view, this is a brilliant thing to attempt. It's like looking through a prism, or some other alternate way of seeing things, and you never know what might emerge. You can get new ideas that don't relate directly to pairing any of the images, it just opens your mind up.
Yes, there's value in taking the shortest route between two points at times, because you get shit done that way. There's also value in other paths, for the purpose of growth. Going entirely one way or there other is ultimately limiting, when compared with utilizing both approaches at different times. Best case you get shit done AND expand your horizons, both, in any given month or year or whatever.
Thank you for such a thoughtful response Donn! Definitely, trying a bunch of methods opened my mind to how images can communicate with each other. I hope this will encourage others to try something different too!

Excellent information, covering methodology and sharing your personal take on each one. Inspires me to spend more time printing and pairing myself!
Cheers Paul~ I hope you get to do it soon, it's worth it!
