A few months ago I offered up some advice on taking the pressure off of travel photography. The suggestion I made can be summed up as this - pick a simple motif and gather images of it during the trip. That way you’ll come out the other side with a set of images that are made effective by being in a group. If you’ve ever felt the stress of needing a powerful collection of singular images that represent your travels with poise and acuity, this is your cheat code.
I had this in mind while I was in Thailand recently. I was there to shoot music, but I also got in some street photography while sweating through Bangkok’s back-alleys.
The thing that struck me immediately about Bangkok, other than its furnace-like atmosphere, was the complexity of its colour. The city is relentlessly colourful, a complexity of hues made vibrant by the hot sun.
Here are some of my attempts at harnessing that panchromatic display, excising which hues I could to make it all look intentional.
I came out of Bangkok with one other motif. The walls there are full of life, grime and graffiti, and the confluence of all three turned out to be quite photogenic.
I know, I know. As one of my favorite Magnetic Fields lines goes, drag another cliche howling from the vaults. Still, I thought there was something to them, so I turned them into a set of postcards.
If you want one of these postcards, please send me a private message with your address1 and I’ll post one to you with a little handwritten note on the back. Proof that some of what we see on the internet has real people, AKA me, behind it.
Cheers,
Chris✌️
I promise I’m not a weirdo. At least not the kind that would show up at your house.
Great idea to make those postcards, love it!
I'd love for this to become a trend. I love sending postcards.
