Love the photographs - and that you fell into shooting lookbooks somewhat accidentally! I know of them from back when I used to work on movies in the costume department. I have some questions about your fashion work - What is involved in your preparation for the shoot? How much of your job behind the lens is directing the models? Do you work with an assistant?
Thanks Diana~ The preparation ranges from shoot to shoot. I work with several companies so sometimes they’ll ask me to suggest a location/style, and sometimes they’ll have a clear direction which they’ll prepare for. My prep includes making a moodboard in case I need it to help the model with poses, and scouting out locations.
I find the better the model the less directing I do, but I do a lot. I talk constantly, telling the models where to be, what I need, I regularly point out the light source and remind them to consider it. I try to photograph each outfit distinctly so I have to guide the model against unique backgrounds to keep it fresh.
I had an assistant to carry bags on this shoot but usually it’s just me and staff from the company. I have worked with these companies for a few years so if something comes up and I need help, I’ll ask. But typically I can make do without an assistant. They’re nice to have though!
These are great! I haven't shot a lookbook in a long time. I agree with what you said about it feeling like play. It's a great way to experiment but also work with constraints. Nice work!
Cheers Zachary! When a shoot like this is going well it’s just fun start to finish. We usually have a lot to get through in a short time here, but I enjoy the process~
Nice!
